Find a firm that you are comfortable with and that offers support to grow your business. Go to open houses in the area and talk to agents about the firms they work for. Los Angeles is a big market. I interviewed 4 firms before making my choice of which company to join. I would also read Mastering The Art of Selling Real Estate by Tom Hopkins and The Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller. I am a license commercial real estate sales person and love it. Every transaction is a challenge whether in a good or bad economy. It doesn't help you through the process any faster that you helped with a deal. I also wouldn't tell too many people about it because it's actually illegal to get a commission for a RE deal without a license.
